Your perineum after birth
Perineal trauma during childbirth is common. More than 85% of women who have a vaginal birth sustain some sort of perineal trauma, and 60% to 70% receive stitches to repair perineal trauma. Perineal trauma is any damage to the genitalia during childbirth that occurs spontaneously or intentionally by surgical incision (episiotomy).
Even if you didnt have any stiches you might experience some discomfort after birth any your perineum might feel sore, swallen, buced and inflamed, simlply because al your skin, muscles and blood vassels have been strtched by your baby.
Today I’m going to make some Padsicles – these are a fancy term coined for maternity pads loaded with soothing healing remedies that have been frozen previously for your time of need.
What do you need ?
Organic Maternity pads or organic extra large pads. After birth you will be changing pads often,in the first few days every time you go to the toilet. Today the recepie I’m going to make is for a pack of pads.
Aloe vera gel: It’s thick and will load up the padsicles with soothing and healing gel. Aloe vera is a true medicinal plant concentrated with anti-inflammatory properties, and immune-enhancing qualities. When buying aloe vera, know that the best source is straight from the plant! If you don’t have an aloe plant at home yet, make sure you buy organic products.
Witch Hazel that doesn’t contain any alcohol. Witch hazel was used extensively by the Native Americans for its beneficial medicinal properties. It is very soothing on the skin: it reduces inflammation and reduces swelling and redness. It has anti-inflammatory and hemostatic properties; it relieves itching and burning, stops bleeding, and also helps hemorrhoids heal.
Geranium essential oil is wonderful for soothing and softening the skin it alleviates pain, stimulates healing from burns and wounds, enhance mood, and reduce inflammation and has a lovely smell. If you dont like the smell of geranium you can use labander oil ro a combination of both. I used Absolute aroma essential oil.
Calendula tincture Calendula (Calendula off.) has anti-inflammatory, astringent, vulnerary and anti-microbial properties. This will assist with wound healing by softening the skin and reducing inflammation. Its healing power appears to be based in part on the presence of terpenes. A triterpene glycoside called calendulozide B exerts a marked sedative and anti-ulcerous action.
Rescue Remedy is the universal healer, you should always have it at home. Its a flower remedy and provide physical and emotional support for any type of crisis or trauma (phisical trauma, emotional trauma or perineum trauma in this case) Rescue Remedy, is a ready-made combination of 5 flower essences that can provide comfort and reassurance following stressful situations and assist with healing by recreating a physical, emotional, mental balance.

- Open up all of the maxi pads but don’t take them off of the liner where the sticky part is.
- Spread a thin layer of aloe on each pad. You’ll want to be pretty generous with putting it all over.
- Fill A 100 MLS spray bottle to within with the witch hazel, leave 1 inch or so for other ingredients
- 10 drops of geranium or lavander oil, few drops of rescue remedy, 5-10 mls of calendula tincture.
- Spray each pad on top of the Aloe Vera gel liberally.
- Fold your new padsicles back up and store in freezer bags in the freezer.
- When you want to use them remove one from the freezer and leave it at room temperature for a while before apply it and make sure is not to frozen (you can get ice burn).
